I love going to the movies and here I’ll share with you what I’ve seen from stuff showing on the South African circuit and what I thought about it. Maybe it can be of some sort of help to you, otherwise tell me how wrong you think I am.
Some of my movie rules:
I avoid superhero/comic-book movies almost as a rule. Exceptions that I’ve enjoyed were Kick-Ass, one of my favourite movies ever, and the Nolan Batman movies.
I don’t watch scary horror flicks, they’re a niche genre in my opinion and are usually quite hollow. Plus they give me nightmares. But, while I don’t like it, I’ll give some mindf*cky thrillers a shot every now and then.
Approach any Adam Sandler movie with caution. The same goes for Channing Tatum, Dane Cook, Gerard Butler. Jim Carrey nowadays too as much as it pains me to say it.
Approach any Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen/Paul Rudd/Jonah Hill/Jason Segel picture with carefree abandon. But know that they too might break your heart.
I used to love animation, but I feel like I’ve outgrown it, or the best ones are long gone. I did watch Toy Story 3 and wept a little at the end. So what?
Big franchise movies annoy me as well (sequels, basically). And remakes are the worst. Usually. Or maybe reboots with past-their-prime actors.
